Caroline Lucas eschewed party political advantage in her address to the ITV Leaders’ Debate, to express sentiments that most progressive voters are likely to agree with:

“Never in my lifetime has our future felt so uncertain. Brexit, climate change, an NHS in crisis. But when people come together and reach for a bigger future, we can change the course of history.
“With courage, we emerged from the rubble of the second world war. With vision, we forged a continent that’s lived at peace for the past 70 years. And with ambition, we built a free and universal NHS.
“We did these things not in the good times, but in our darkest moments. And together, we can make big things happen again. We can end the scandal of 4 million children living in poverty in one of the richest countries in the world. We can transform our energy system to make it the cleanest and greenest. And we can forge a relationship with Europe which is open and says no to racism.”
Caroline goes into #GE17 with a majority of nearly 8,000 in Brighton Pavilion as the Greens’ only MP.
This is despite the Green Party polling an aggregate of 1,157,613 votes in the 2015 General Election, or 3.8% of the national total. This would have won them 25 seats in a truly proportional system.
